FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A trio of unbeaten teams remain in the current Metro Conference men's soccer standings and Head Coach
Krystian Witkowski's squad is one of them. This week, the Stags will play the other two unbeaten teams on the road beginning with Quinnipiac University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Stags and the Bobcats are scheduled for a 12 pm start on Wednesday which is a rescheduled date from last week's postponement due to weather conditions. Both teams enter the match with 3-0-0 marks in Metro play and are tied with nine points each. Mount St. Mary's, Fairfield's weekend opponent, is next in line with points based on its 2-0-2 record against conference foes.
Fairfield brings a seven-game unbeaten streak into this week's action which includes four consecutive wins as well as back-to-back shutouts. The Stags picked up a home victory against Manhattan University in their last outing, scoring a pair of goals in the final minute to earn a 3-0 decision.
Cristian Ortiz tallied two of those three goals while
Cristiano Carlos posted a pair of assists in the match. The duo represents the team's top scorers with Carlos tallying five goals and five assists for 15 points and Ortiz collecting three goals and two assists for eight points.
Goalkeeper
Evan Chomow was in goal for all but nine minutes of last week's two clean sheets, picking up five saves in a 4-0 win against Saint Peter's University and a pair of stops in the Manhattan decision. For his efforts, the goalkeeper was named the Metro Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The sophomore ranks second in the Metro Conference with his 1.14 goals against average as well as his .780 save percentage.1-0), Manhattan (3-1), and Canisius University (5-0), outscoring the trio by a 9-1 count.
Quinnipiac checks into this week's action with a 5-3-0 overall record with five straight conference wins dating back to last year. The Bobcats have posted victories over Metro opponents Rider University (1-0), Manhattan (3-1), and Canisius University (5-0), outscoring the trio by a 9-1 count.
Taehyeon Lim owns the top scoring total totals in all games and conference games. Overall, the sophomore has six goals and two assists for 14 points in his eight starts, while posting two goals for four points in his three Metro matches. Goalkeeper Alexander Hansen has played every minute of the season, registering a 1.62 goals against average with a .745 save percentage off 38 saves.
Mount St. Mary's plays Bucknell University in a non-conference match before welcoming Fairfield to campus on Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers scored eight goals in their first two Metro games, defeating Marist by a 4-3 count and Iona University by a 4-0 score. In their last two conference matches, the team played both Canisius and Merrimack College to a 1-1 draw.
Lincoln Bauer paces the offense with three goals and five assists for 11 points, while Christian Kyriacou places second with three goals and one assist for seven points. All but one of Bauer's points have come in Metro play, recording three goals and four assists in those games. Goalkeeper Ryan Collins has seen most of the action for the Mountaineers, sporting a 1.27 goals against average with .706 save percentage.
The Stags will return home on Wednesday, October 14 when they host Marist University in Metro Conference play. The two teams are scheduled for a 6 pm start at Lessing Field.
