WEYMOUTH, Mass. — Fairfield University Men's Tennis narrowly fell to Boston University, 4-3 on Saturday at the Weymouth Club. The Stags secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions but were unable to convert the three singles matches needed for a win.
"A tough loss tonight for the guys. BU played very well and we were a bit too inconsistent," said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker. "These types of close matches will help us going forward, but we have a lot to work on."
Fairfield secured the doubles point with wins on the top two courts. At No. 1 doubles,
Kostas Kollias and
Kacper Krolikowski prevailed with a 6-3 victory. The No. 2 doubles team of
Alex Aguiar and
Calum Jessett also triumphed by a 6-3 score. The No. 3 doubles match featuring
Diego Alcala and
Luca Benaibbouche concluded with a 3-6 result.
In singles play, Jessett delivered a convincing win at No. 3 singles, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile, Aguiar emerged victorious at No. 5 singles with a close 7-6(5), 7-5 finish.
The matches at No. 1 and No. 4 singles were contested over three sets. Alcala at No. 1 singles fell 6-7(4), 2-6, while
Pol Otin faced a tough battle at No. 4 singles, eventually falling 1-6, 7-6(1), 1-6. Kollias at No. 2 singles was narrowly edged out in a tiebreaker, concluding with a 3-6, 6-7(4) score.
Zach Whittington's match at No. 6 singles ended in a straight-set loss, 2-6, 3-6.
Fairfield Men's Tennis is back in action with two matches on Sunday, Feb. 8 at West Point. The Stags will play Binghamton in the morning and meet host Army at 6 p.m.
