FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team will play another slate of five games this weekend after opening the 2025 campaign with a five-game run at the Hatter Classic last weekend. This weekend, the Stags will travel to Georgia for a pair of games with Campbell University and Oakland University in addition to a contest with host Georgia Southern University.
Fairfield opens with a single game against Campbell on Friday at 11:30 am before taking on Georgia Southern at 4:30 pm later that day. The stay continues with another game against Campbell and a date with Oakland on Saturday with game times listed as 10:00 am and 5:30 pm, respectively. The final day includes another outing against Oakland on Sunday with first pitch slated for 9:30 am.
The Stags won their season opener against Bethune-Cookman University last Friday before dropping the final four games in the series hosted by Stetson University last week. The team saw several solid performances from both the batter's box and the pitching circle despite it being the opening weekend. Offensively, eight different Stags scored a run while student-athletes scored at least one run a week ago. Four pitchers earned innings and all had at least two appearances over the five games in Florida.
Anna Paravati picked up a hit in all five games the team played including a two-hit performance in the Stetson game. Over here five appearances, Paravati batted .429 with six hits in 14 at-bats with one run scored and two RBI. Her batting average ranks 13th in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), while her hitting percentage is 10th best in the conference among teams that have played five or more games.
Quinn McGonigle also enjoyed a good opening weekend by hitting .333 with a pair of hits in six at-bats along with a team-best .600 on-base percentage.
Alyssa Weinberg returned home with a 1-1 record and a 1.62 ERA, striking out 12 hitters through her 13 innings pitched. Both of her appearances were as a starter and she completed both of those outings.
Peyton Shields earned a team-best three appearances including two starts which led her to a team-low 0.50 ERA with four strikeouts in 14 innings tossed. Her lone relief appearance came in the series finale against Wofford, registering five-plus innings of scoreless softball.
Campbell enters the tournament with a 7-2 record led by senior outfielder Tyra Parker who owns a team-best .385 batting average with 12 runs scored over her nine starts. Casiti Baroni paces the Camels pitching staff with a 3-0 record along with three wins and a save over her six appearances. Georgia Southern brings a 4-5 record into the weekend along with three hitters who are batting better than .300. Madi Gillespie sits on top of the offensive statistics with her .333 batting average off eight hits in 24 at-bats. Bailey Hollands owns a team-best 2.04 ERA with a 2-1 record through her team-leading 27 innings pitched. Oakland University will be making its 2025 season debut at the GATA Classic after posting a 25-19 record in 2024.
Following the GATA Classic, the Fairfield University softball team will have a weekend off before resuming the schedule at the Penn State Invitational on March 7-9. Canisius University, Lafayette University, and Penn State University will on the Stags' docket during the three-day stay.Â
