FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team picked up their 20th win of the season as their defense locked down Saint Peter's for a 73-43 victory at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The Peacocks were the eighth MAAC opponent the Stags have held under 50 points as the Stags held Saint Peter's to a .326 field goal percentage and just one point in the second quarter.
Offensively, the Stags (20-3; 14-0 MAAC) were led by three Stags in double-figures with
Raiana Brown and
Meghan Andersen leading the way with 17 points apiece. Brown went 6-for-7 from the floor and over her last two games is shooting an incredible 94 percent, hitting 17 of her 18 shots.
"Rai has been chipping away all season long," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "It's always an adjustment coming into our system, there's a lot to learn. There's a lot of nuance that goes into the motion and I think with the work with Coach Blake and watching film she's put in so much work. We've been waiting for someone to be like 'give me the ball' and we all know when Rai wants the ball. She's stayed the course and since we've been in conference play she's been a cheat code for getting easy points inside."
Along with the duo,
Kendall McGruder added double-figures with 10 points including a pair of 3-pointers. Her first triple closed out the first quarter as the Stags went into the first intermission with a 24-16 lead.
Fairfield's defense would step up in the second quarter as they held Saint Peter's to just one point while missing all eight of their field goal attempts. Offensively, the Stags out-scored the Peacocks 13-1 in that quarter.
The Stags connected on seven triples in the game with five of those coming in the first half.
Sydni Scott and
Jillian Huerter joined McGruder by each knocking down a pair.
Fairfield also found dominance inside the paint, out-scoring Saint Peter's 44-10 in the paint while holding their star player Fatmata Janneh to just 14 points.
Fairfield shot 57 percent from the floor and out-rebounded Saint Peter's 32-22.
The Stags have now won 37-straight games against MAAC competition and increase their current MAAC record to 14-0.
The Stags will put those records on the line when they travel to Manhattan on Saturday at 2pm.
