Wright Named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Women's Soccer senior goalkeeper Katie Wright was named the Jersey Mike's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Stags to a 1-0-1 week. Wright earned a shutout with five saves in the draw against Marist while also picking up the win over previous league-leading Canisius. The win over the Griffs was Wright's 49th of her career, tying the program's all-time record set by Anne Lyons 25 years ago.

"Katie has been working really hard and has had a great season so far," Head Coach David Barrett said. "I'm glad she's being recognized for her good work."

Wright started her week with a five save performance in the scoreless draw against Marist on Wednesday night. Her best stop came in the 50th minute as she hit a 1v1 attempt by Red Foxes' leading scorer Gabby Tirado over the bar.

She followed that outing with a victory over Canisius, surrendering just one goal while picking up two saves. Wright save the three points for the Stags as she blocked away a Griffs shot with just six seconds left in the match. The win was Wright's 49th of her career which ties her for the program's all-time wins record set by Anne Lyons 25 years ago.

This is Wright's first weekly award of the season and the third of her career. For the season, Wright holds the lowest goals against average in the MAAC at a .702 clip. She is also second in the conference with four shutouts and third with a .810 save percentage.

Wright and the Stags are back in action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Mount St. Mary's at Lessing Field at 4pm.
