HAMDEN, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball saw its 10-match winning streak come to a close as host Quinnipiac handed the Stags their first MAAC loss with a 3-0 decision on Friday in Hamden.
Mamie Krubally led the Stags' offense with 11 kills.
With the loss, Fairfield slips to 9-1 in the MAAC as a part of a 15-5 overall tally. Quinnipiac levels its mark at 11-11 overall and moves to within one match of the Stags – and clinches the season tiebreaker over Fairfield – at 8-2. Tonight's contest went to the Bobcats by set scores of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-22.
Coupled with Fairfield's 3-1 win over Quinnipiac last month at Mahoney Arena, there has not been a sweep of the season series (including postseason) between the Stags and Bobcats since Fairfield took both meetings in the fall 2021 campaign. The teams have met in the finals in each of the last three MAAC Championships.
In tonight's match, Krubally was the lone Stag to tally double-digit kills with 11 from the right side.
Allie Elliott added seven kills from the pins and the duo of
Katelyn Cook (.545) and
Emma Bortolotti each put down six.
Harlan Wyche added three kills,
Maya Walker had two, and
Zofia Sykut dumped over one from the setter spot.
Sykut handed out 19 assists and also led the back row with eight digs.
Abby Jandro chipped in eight assists and five digs as Fairfield's 6-2 offense posted a .189 hitting percentage.
At the net, Walker led the charge with a hand in eight of the Stags' 12 team blocks, including two solo sendbacks. Wyche got a piece of four blocks (one solo) and Krubally played a part in three. In addition to Sykut's team-leading eight digs, Elliott had six with Cook and Jandro each contributing five.
Quinnipiac was led by Ginevra Giovagnoni with 15 kills and 14 by Elena Giacomini – the last two MAAC Players of the Year. Yagmur Gunes added nine kills and a match-high 12 digs.
The Bobcats hit .233 for the match. Fairfield has held its opponent under .200 hitting in eight of 10 MAAC contests, with Quinnipiac as the team to exceed that mark in both meetings this fall.
Fairfield Volleyball continues its five-match road swing tomorrow at Merrimack. First serve in North Andover is set for 3 p.m. The Warriors were swept this evening by Sacred Heart to fall to 5-14 overall and 3-7 in the MAAC.
