FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team will finish up its brief two-match home stand by hosting Stonehill College on Wednesday night. The event takes place at Lessing Field beginning at 7 pm.
The Stags put forth another multi-goal effort in their 3-2 setback against Lafayette College last Saturday night, giving Fairfield five goals in its last two outings. The team is averaging 1.67 goals per match which ranks third among MAAC teams while its five goals is also third behind Canisius (7 goals in four matches) and Sacred Heart (6 goals in 3 matches).
Freshman
Devin Zachry has paced the offense with two goals which came in his first collegiate starts. He posted a goal at FDU before adding another to his season total with a goal in the Lafayette match. For his efforts, the forward earned both the MAAC Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week awards.
Owen Drummond is right there with his classmate, having a hand in three of the team's five goals. He posted a goal in his collegiate debut and added an assist in each of his last two matches which gives him four points so far. Graduate student
Thomas Drillien continues his ascent up the career goals list, registering his first of the campaign against Lafayette. The forward has 16 goals to his credit which places him 12
th all-time and one goal short of moving into a four-way tie for ninth at 17 goals.
Goalkeeper
Viktor Nikolov showed his skills with a season-high seven saves in the Lafayette match. The junior has 12 stops to his credit over his three starts which averages out to four per match. His saves per match average places him in a tie for fifth among MAAC goalkeepers with 4.0 per outing.
Stonehill enters Wednesday night's action with an 0-3-1 record, picking up a point with its 1-1 draw against Navy in its second match of the season. Tiago Lima-Bittencourt and Owen Burke are responsible for the team's two goals to date while Julius Maiwaldt and Colin Milliken are responsible for setting up those goals.
Kyle Tencza and Tyler Sloan have both seen time in the Stonehill goal this season with Sloan getting his first starting nod in the team's last match against Rhode Island. He surrendered one goal in his 90 minutes of work and posted four saves.
Following Wednesday's match, the Stags will embark for four straight road games beginning with LIU on September 11. The swing continues with trips to the University of Vermont on September 14, Columbia on September 18, and UConn on September 24. .Fairfield does not return to Lessing Field until its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener against Marist College on September 28 at 7 pm.
