BERLIN, Conn. - The Fairfield University men's golf team began its 2024 fall schedule with a tie for sixth place in a 16-team field at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate Tournament which took place at the Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Berlin, Connecticut. As a team, Fairfield shot a seven over par 575 for the two rounds with a 290 on Saturday and a 285 on Sunday which put them tied with fellow MAAC member Manhattan and ahead of league squads Iona and Siena on the leaderboard.
The University of Rhode Island won the team event that featured many of the top teams in Division 1 Northeast Regional Men's Golf with a four under par total of 564 over the 36-hole, two-day event. Sacred Heart was at -2 as team, and Army West Point took third place at +2.
Individually for the Stags, sophomore Peter Crowe opened the season in fine style finishing in a tie for fourth place in the tournament firing a two under par 140 over the 36 holes, as he turned in a round of 68 on Sunday placing him four shots out of first place.
Senior Colin Summers had an excellent weekend shooting an even par 71 in both rounds to finish in a tie for tenth place with a score of 142, six shots off the lead.
John Heckel, Jr. of Army West Point and Mike Rothberg of Sacred Heart tied for medalist honors in the tournament, as they each finished with a six under par total of 136.
Chase Millar tied for 28th on the weekend shooting a four over par 146 (76-70), and Rasmus Ditzinger tied for 47th with a seven over par 149 (76-73) to round out the Fairfield finishers in the top 50 of the 90-player competition.
Ben Madden, Tadgh Burke and Anthony Naples all finished with identical scores of 151 over the two rounds to kick off the 2024-25 season.
Up next, the Stags will have two groups of players taking to courses next week, as the team will participate in both the UConn Invitational at Great Horse in Hampden, Massachusetts from September 29 through October 1 and the Sacred Heart Fall Classic that will take place at Great River Golf Club in Milford, Connecticut on September 30 and October 1.
