BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Fairfield University field hockey held advantages in most of the offensive categories this afternoon against Lehigh University, but the Mountain Hawks were able to post a couple of third-quarter goals to pull away with a 2-0 win over the Stags. Fairfield registered a 16-12 advantage in shots and an 11-7 edge in corner kicks but was not able to finish any of those offensive chances.
Fairfield's defense was on alert for most of the first half, keeping Lehigh from establishing any offensive rhythm through most of the first half. The Mountain Hawks managed just one shot in the first quarter but the ball did not make it to goalkeeper
Payton Rahn. In the second quarter, Lehigh posted one more shot in the first 10 minutes of the second quarter but once again it did not result in any danger. The Hawks put back to back shots later in the quarter off a penalty corner but both were deflected away by the Stags back line.
While the defense kept Lehigh in check, Fairfield was able to create more chances, putting three shots toward goal in the first 15 minutes and another four more before the half ended. Three of those attempts were on target but Lehigh goalkeeper Jenny Canoni was able to turn away those tries.
After the half ended, Lehigh moved down the pitch on its first possession and earned a penalty corner just 37 seconds into the third quarter. After the ball bounced around the circle for a few seconds, Julia Gatelein back handed a shot that had some lift and caught the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
Less than three seconds later, the home team put together another offensive push that resulted in the game's second goal. After an initial shot was saved by Rahn, the Mountain Hawks improved their advantage to 2-0 when Aubrey Ide collected the rebound and pushed the ball past the goalkeeper with 11:39 remaining in the third quarter.
Fairfield turned up the pressure and made several runs at the Lehigh circle, putting four shots toward the goal over the remaining 11 minutes with two of those attempts requiring a save.
Konni Hofmann and
Pilar Mengotti were responsible for those shots that were on target.
In the fourth quarter, Fairfield continued to work its way into the offensive third and move into the Mountain Hawks' circle, adding four more shots to its total but only one was on goal.
The Fairfield University field hockey team will return home for its next match, hosting the University of New Hampshire on Friday, September 20. The game is slated for a 4 pm start at University Field.
