FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Former Fairfield University Baseball pitcher Michael Sansone '22 has signed a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox. Sansone was one of the best left-handed pitchers in Fairfield history, ranking fifth all-time in wins (19) and fourth in strikeouts (217). He is also second in program history for fewest walks per nine innings (1.69).
"I'm very excited to have another chance in a minor league system with the Red Sox," Sansone said. "It's been a long offseason but I just stuck to my usual plan that's gotten me this far in my career and just hoped for the best going into the year. I'm just very grateful that it worked out and I got a call early in the season."
"I'm very excited for Michael who has worked so hard to keep rising to the next level in baseball," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "This second chance in the minor leagues is a great chance to see the special abilities of Mike Sansone."
Sansone finished his Fairfield career with a 19-9 record which featured a historic 9-2 season in 2021, helping him to an All-MAAC First Team selection. The nine victories, including a crucial win over Arizona State in the NCAA Tournament, tied a program single season record. In helping the Stags to their historical season, Sansone finished in the top-5 in the MAAC in: ERA (2.58), WHIP (1.01), and Strikeout-to-Walk ratio (4.87).
The hard-throwing left-hander was one of just five Stags all-time to strikeout 200 or more batters in his career, finishing with 217.
That success carried over in summer ball as he was named to the prestigious Cape Cod League All-Star Team in back-to-back seasons, the first Stag ever honored by the summer league.
Most recently, Sansone appeared in 19 career games in the Tampa Bay Rays system while tallying three wins and a save while striking out 43 batters in 33.2 innings. He also posted a 3.09 ERA during his time with the minor leagues.
Sansone was the 32nd Stag all-time to sign a professional contract and the 10th in the 11 seasons under Head Coach Currier. Sansone helped the Stags to two MAAC Regular Season Championships including their first-ever At-Large big into the NCAA Regionals in 2021.
