NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball team dropped a non-conference match up with Central Connecticut State University this afternoon as the Blue Devils scored early and were able to ride the quick start to a 6-1 win over the Stags.
The home team opened the game by putting their two batters on base with a walk and a single, setting up the inning. After a grounder allowed both runners to advance, a mishandled ground ball and a fly ball to the outfield brought the two runners home and built the a 2-0 lead for Central Connecticut. The Blue Devils would tack on three more runs in their half of the third inning by once again starting with the first two batters gaining their way onto the base paths. After a lead off single and a walk, Paige Stringer launched a fly ball that cleared the fence and pushed Central Connecticut's lead to 5-0.
The Stags were able to put their first run of the game on the scoreboard courtesy of
Megan Forbes' solo home run over the left field wall to make the score 5-1. For Forbes, the home run was her second of the season with her first being hit last weekend. Central Connecticut managed one more run in the ball game after a pair of walks set up an RBI single from Morgan Goodspeed to close out the game's scoring at 6-1.
Chela Kovar, the reigning MAAC Co-Rookie of the Week, finished the game out of the bullpen by tossing the final four innings of the contest. She allowed just three hits during her stint and yielded just the one run in the sixth inning. Kovar raised her season innings total to 38 which is second only to starter Alysaa Weinberg's 51-plus innings pitched. Kovar also struck out three batters and walked two other hitters over her stint.
Each of Fairfield's top four hitters on the lineup card picked up a base hit during the game, namely
Charli Warren,
Morgan Sylvestre, Forbes,and
Cara Kochakian.
