Softball Falls In Series Opener With Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- The Fairfield University softball team opened its three-game series with a 4-2 setback to Saint Peter's University, setting up the final two games of the series on Saturday. The doubleheader game time has changed from 12 pm to 11 am.

The Stags looked to get a fast start in today's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match up and they did just that by scoring a run in their first time in the batter's box. With one out, Morgan Sylvestre drove a double to right field to put herself in scoring position. After a fly out to center field, Sylvestre came around to score the game's first run thanks to Anna Paravati's two-base hit to right field as well.

Saint Peter's recovered by scoring a pair of runs despite some defensive magic by Fairfield in the bottom of the first. The team's first attempt to score was thwarted by center fielder Charli Warren who throw out a base runner trying to score the tying run but instead turned into the second out. However, the home team put together three successive hits after the putout which accounted for the tying and go-ahead runs to cross home plate.

Fairfield had an opportunity to tie the game in the second by putting setting a runner on second base when Delaney Whieldon opened with an infield single. She went to second following a sacrifice bunt. but the inning came to an end though when the next two batters were retired on a strikeout and a fly ball to keep the deficit in place. Saint Peter's padded its advantage with a single run in the bottom of the inning without the benefit of a hit. A one-out walk set up the success which ended when an error allowed the team's third run to cross home plate.

The Stags kept themselves in the game with a run in the top of third inning with Warren getting the rally started with a single. After Warren swiped second, Morgan Sylvestre worked out a walk to put two runners on base with no outs. Allie Bridgman launched a fly ball that allowed both runners to move up a base, setting up Warren to record Fairfield's second run courtesy of Quinn McGonigle's sacrifice fly.

Once again, Saint Peter's answered immediately with a lead off home run that closed the scoring for both teams. Fairfield threatened by placing runners on in the final three innings with Martina Guitierrez opening the fifth with a base hit, Whieldon beating out an infield hit in the sixth, and Sylvestre collecting her second hit of the game in the seventh. But in each case, Saint Peter's was able to work out of the jam and keep its 4-2 lead in place.
