ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – In a season full of historical moments and accomplishments, the No. 25 nationally-ranked Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will have the chance to finally reach their ultimate goal. The top-seeded Stags will compete for the coveted Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament when they take on the second-seeded Niagara Purple Eagles in the MAAC Championship Final on Saturday at 3:30 at the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. All the action will be broadcasted live on ESPNU.
No. 25 Fairfield earned the right to play for the tournament title after running past fifth-seeded Canisius in the Semifinals with a 77-64 victory. The Stags regained their shooting touch by connecting on 11 3-pointers and having five different players reach double-figures.
The MAAC Player of the Year,
Janelle Brown led the scoring output with 19 as she went 6-for-9 from the field. All-MAAC Third Team honoree
Emina Selimovic recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Selimovic led the battle of the boards as she collected six offensive rebounds, helping the Stags to 19 "o-boards" and 17 second chance points. As a team, the Stags out-rebounded the Griffs 45-27.
The win brought Fairfield's season total to 30, the first team in program history – and the fourth in MAAC history – to reach the 30-win plateau. Their overall record stands at an outstanding 30-1 which is the second-highest winning percentage in the country.
Fairfield also extended their winning streak to 28-straight games, breaking the conference record originally set by Marist during the 2009-10 season. The 28-game winning streak is the second-longest in the country trailing only No. 1 South Carolina.
The Stags also reached the 70-point mark for the 20th time this season and raised their season average to 73.1 points per game. They have also connected on 274 3-pointers which is the fourth-most in conference history.
Individually,
Meghan Andersen continues her dominant freshman season as she brought her year total to 479 points, breaking the program's rookie scoring record. She topped Katrina Fields' mark which was set during the 1981-82 season, the very first Division I season for the program.
Niagara advanced to the title game after a convincing 87-70 victory over Siena in the Semifinal round. Niagara's havoc defense has caused a nation-leading 27.8 turnovers per game. Offensively, Aaliyah Parker, and All-MAAC Second Team selection, is the team's leading scorer at 12.1 points per outing.
Fairfield will be providing a free fan bus to the game that will be departing Leo D. Mahoney Arena at 11am. Registration includes a free ride to Atlantic City. Fans are responsible for their own ticket. Fans can sign up for the fan bus
