QUEENS, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team shot a season-best 54 percent led by a career-high 30 points by
Kaety L'Amoreaux but it was not enough as St. John's grabbed a 77-68 victory in Fairfield's final non-conference game. Fairfield amassed a .540 shooting percentage against a St. John's team that entered the game with the nation's best scoring defense. The Stags shot 72 percent on their 2-point attempts going 23-for-32. L'Amoreaux led the accurate shooting with an 12-for-16 performance, including a 11-for-12 mark from 2-point range.
"Kaety was aggressive and it was great to see her finish as efficiently as she did," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "She was unafraid of those quick guards and attacked their pressure with pressure. Her willingness to be physical and to score one on one was something that we needed."
The hot-shooting started early with both sides combining to shoot 74 percent in the first quarter. In fact, the first 10 minutes featured only four rebounds with both teams hitting most of their attempts. Fairfield went 6-for-9 in the first period led by L'Amoreaux who connected on all of her three shot attempts. With their shooting success, the Stags trailed by just five after the first with a 20-15 score.
The Stags hit 50 percent of their attempts and 70 percent of those in 2-point range in the second quarter. However, St. John's was even better in the period going 8-for-13 and extending their lead to double-digits with a 40-30 halftime advantage. Point guard
Izabela Nicoletti Leite willed the Stags closer by the end of the period with two assists to
Lauren Beach in the paint.
In total, Fairfield shot 57 percent in the first half against a team that came in with a .368 opponents field goal percentage.
The Stags cut that deficit to just five after a L'Amoreaux 3-point play, her first of two in the period. The traditional 3-point play put the score at 43-38, but St. John's would answer with six-straight points to put the lead back to double-digits.
L'Amoreaux reached 20 points, tying her previous career-high, with a driving layup in the final minute of the third quarter. She connected on eight of her first nine shot attempts in the first 30 minutes.
She was at the forefront of another Fairfield run in the fourth as the team cut the deficit to six. at the 5:32 mark. The sophomore converted yet another 3-point play, her third of the game and putting her game total to 25.
L'Amoreaux would finish the contest with a 12-for-16 line, with an 11-for-12 performance inside the 3-point arc.
Meghan Andersen joined L'Amoreaux in double-figures with 17.
The Stags will now turn their attention to the MAAC part of the schedule, hosting Mount St. Mary's at Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Saturday at 2pm.
