FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team travel to Quinnipiac University for a Wednesday afternoon match. The game is being played at the Quinnipiac Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium beginning at 2 pm.
Both Fairfield and Quinnipiac are negotiating their position in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings which determines the eight teams that will advance to this weekend's MAAC Championship quarterfinal round. The top eight teams advance to the tournament quarterfinals with both the Stags and the Bobcats currently tied for the eighth spot.
Fairfield comes off a 1-0-1 week during which the team secured four valuable points in the standings. The Stags opened with an impressive 1-0 decision over Sacred Heart University before playing Canisius University to a 2-2 draw. Over their last 10 games, Fairfield has posted a 3-2-5 overall record and a 2-2-3 mark in MAAC play.
Freshman
Devin Zachry tallied the game winner against Sacred Heart, his third goal of the season which brings his season total to 11 points. He leads the team with five assists and is just a pair of points off
William Pierce's team-leading 13 points. Pierce is the team's top goal scorer with five goals. As a team, Fairfield has 11 student-athletes with at least a goal this year and 16 players with at least one point on the season.
Goalkeeper
Viktor Nikolov collected his second MAAC Defensive Player of the Week award for his performances against Sacred Heart and Canisius. The junior secured eight saves in the Pioneers victory and added four more in the draw with the Golden Griffs. He owned a 1.00 goals against average with a .857 save percentage in the two matches.
Quinnipiac has won its last two conference games, defeating Merrimack College by a 3-2 score and Niagara University by a 1-0 count to push the team back into postseason contention. Andrew Monteserin posted the game winner against Niagara, beating the goalkeeper in the 79
th minute. Ramesh Delsouz tallied the deciding goal against Merrimack, hitting the back of the net in the 86
th minute.
Filip Kangeman represents the team's top scorer this season, recording four goals and four assists for 12 points. Alex Miller is the only Bobcat with more assists, registering six through his 15 appearances. William Holum and Noe Cabezas have also added offense to the cause with three goals each. The goalkeeper duties have been handled Karl Netzell, who has started 15 games this season. His numbers include a 1.32 goals against average and a .736 save percentage off 53 saves.
Rider, Iona, and Siena are the only MAAC teams to have clinched a conference tournament berth with the other five spots still up for grabs going into the final day of the regular season. The MAAC quarterfinal round begins on Sunday, November 10 with the top four seeds hosting the matches.
