STILLWATER, Okla. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team rallied from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to get within one possession, but could not complete the comeback as they fell to the Oklahoma State Cowgirls 64-62 on Saturday. The Stags had four players reach double-figures led by the duo of
Kaety L'Amoreaux and Izabela Nicoletti-Leite who had 13 points apiece.
"While we are disappointed to not be coming home with a win, I am proud of our resilience and toughness down the stretch," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "Our defense in the 4th quarter gave us a chance to win the game against a good Big 12 team on the road. A lot of positive aspects to build on as we take steps toward being the best team we can be."
The Stags fell behind 58-46 after an Anna Asi fast break layup but would go on a 11-4 run during the next three minutes to get back within striking distance.
L'Amoreaux started the rally with a 3-pointer and then added a pair of free throws.
Meghan Andersen capped the run with a 3-pointer at the 3:38 mark to put the Stags within six.
Nicoletti-Leite got the Stags even closer with a trifecta at the 1:42 mark and
Janelle Brown made it a one-possession game with a driving layup with 30 seconds remaining.
Fairfield would then force a shot clock violation, giving the Stags their final chance. The Oklahoma State defense held as the Stags could not get a shot off as time expired.
The Stags had to rally from several double-digit deficits, trailing by as many as 16 in the third quarter. Freshman
Cyanne Coe would tally seven-straight points in a two-minute span to cut that deficit to seven. Coe's seven points was a career-high including her first career 3-pointer during the run.
Nicoletti-Leite also had her best offensive game of the season, tying a team-high of 13 points while also going 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
As a team, the Stags connected on 10 3-pointers with six of those coming in the second half. Nicoletti-Leite, L'Amoreaux, and Andersen combined for seven of the team's long-range shots.
Fairfield will return home to face Central Connecticut State on Wednesday night at 7pm.
