FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team got back in the win column in an emphatic way by netting 82 points in an 82-54 victory over Central Conn. St. at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The Stags offense was firing all game long with eight different players in the scoring column and totaling 22 assists as a team.
Emina Selimovic led the scorers with 16 points while
Izabela Nicoletti Leite led the playmakers by tying her career-high with 10 assists and just missing a double-double with nine points.
"I think what we need to prove is what our identity is going forward," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "This group is kind of still forming our identity and trying to be a team that's selfless, that takes care of the basketball, and is really disciplined. I think we took a step forward but still trying to put a 40 minute together. I'm really proud of our 22 assists and 14 turnovers. We shot the ball really well from three so it was good to get the monkey off our back there."
The Stags (2-2) grabbed the lead just two seconds into the game as Nicoletti-Leite found freshman
Cyanne Coe on a fastbreak layup, which was a sign of things to come. The Stags scored the first nine points of the game, forcing the Blue Devils to take their first timeout three minutes into the contest.
Fairfield would grab a 13-point lead to end the first quarter on a last second 3-pointer by
Meghan Andersen. The Stags ran that lead to as many as 31 in the third quarter on another trifecta by
Kendall McGruder.
In total, the Stags connected on 11 3-pointers in the contest, the third time this season they have hit double-digit long range shots.
Janelle Brown led the team from behind the arc with a 3-for-7 showing while Selimovic,
Kaety L'Amoreaux, and Nicoletti-Leite all hit a pair.
Brown was one of three Stags in double-figures with 15 points and just missed a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds. She is now 14 points away from joining the program's 1,000 point club.
Andersen joined Brown and Selimovic in double figures as she finished with 15 on 6-for-11 shooting.
The Stags will look to continue the momentum when they make the first stop on their Carolina trip with a visit to Charleston Southern on Monday at 6pm.
