FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team will close out its home regular-season schedule on Saturday when it hosts Canisius University at Lessing Field. The game is scheduled for 2 pm.
Fairfield picked up a victory in its last outing, edging Sacred Heart University by a 1-0 count on Wednesday night. Besides the addition in the win column, the Stags earned three more points in the conference standings which puts them closer to earning a bid to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament which begins on November 10. The team has two games left on the docket beginning with Saturday's match up against Canisius. The regular-season finale comes next Wednesday when the team travels up the interstate for a match at Quinnipiac University. The Stags currently own a 2-2-2 mark in conference play.
Freshman
Devin Zachry and junior
Kaea Rangihaeata combined for the game winner against Sacred Heart with Rangihaeata setting up Zachry in the 78
th minute. Zachry has been the distributor for most of the season, leading the team with five assists, but turned the tables when he tallied his third goal of the campaign. Rangihaeata picked up his second assist on the year and first since setting up a goal in the Stonehill game back in September.
Goalkeeper
Viktor Nikolov collected his third clean sheet of the season after making eight saves against Sacred Heart. He made 17 saves over his last two appearances and posted seven or more saves for the fourth time this season. The junior saw his goals against average drop to 1.98 following his performance, an enhancement based on allowing just seven goals in his last nine appearances.
Canisius is also battling for one of those eight MAAC tournament slots, checking into the weekend with a 1-3-2 record in conference action. The Griffs earned their first MAAC win of the season in Wednesday's 2-1 decision over Mount St. Mary's. Canisius scored twice in an 11-minute span, the second of which came in the 70
th minute off the foot of Mason Petrucci.
Michael Switala paces the Griffs' offense with 10 points off his four goals and two assists which is three points better than Petrucci's (two goals, three assists) and Ely Sidibe's (three goals, one assist) seven points. Goalkeeper Jack Petrie has seen most of the minutes in the Canisius goal, gaining entry to 11 of the team's matches. Over those 11 dates, the senior collected a 2.35 goals against average with a .635 save percentage off 40 stops.
Before the Canisius match, the Stags will honor the Class of 2025 with a ceremony that is slated to begin around 1:45 pm.
