Field Hockey Continues NEC Play By Hosting Wagner, Mercyhurst

FAIRFIELD, Conn. --- The Fairfield University field hockey team will complete its three-game home stand this weekend by hosting a pair of Northeast Conference (NEC) games, beginning with a Friday afternoon date against Wagner College. The weekend concludes on Sunday afternoon as Mercyhurst University comes to University Field.

The Stags are coming off an impressive 2-1 win against the University of Maine which was the team's second straight non-conference victory. Pilar Mengotti and Konni Hofmann were responsible for the team's two goals while goalkeeper Emily Streib tied her season-high with eight saves against the Black Bears.

The goal improved Hofmann's season scoring total to seven points and three goals, both of which pace the Fairfield offensive tally. Mengotti became the Stags' third multi-goal scorer on the season when she made good on her second goal of 2024 in the Maine game. She currently has two goals for four points, the same numbers for Rylee LaLoup.

Streib earned both starts last weekend, picking up four saves and allowing one goal in a loss to Rider in the two teams' NEC opener. She rebounded with her strong performance against Maine, which allowed her to average six saves and a 1.00 goals against average last weekend. For the season, she has five starts with a 2.13 goals against average and .774 save percentage (24 stops this season). Payton Rahn has also performed well in her three starts, sporting a 1.55 goals against average and .727 save percentage.

Wagner enters Friday's match as one of four teams that possess a 2-0 record in the NEC field hockey standings, joining Rider and Sacred Heart. The team has won four straight games which includes decisions over Mercyhurst, Hofstra, LIU, and Columbia by a 14-0 count. In fact, the last goal allowed by Wagner came on September 15 when Vermont handed a 2-0 setback on September 15.

The team has three scorers with 10 or more points led by Floortje Leunisse's 13 points off six goals and one assist. Charlotte Muller posted five goals and three assists for 13 points while Cami Valor registered 10 points courtesy of four goals and two assists over her nine appearances. Saar van Dalen has started all nine games in the Wagner goal, sporting a 1.13 save percentage.

Mercyhurst is looking for its first win of the season, last playing on September 25 which resulted in a 3-2 overtime setback. The Lakers scored twice in the third quarter to take a one-goal lead before D'Youville rallied to win the game in extra time. The team is playing their sixth road game in nine dates and its third consecutive date away from campus when it travels to Fairfield.

Rachel Kosowski scored her team-leading second goal when she tallied the go-ahead goal against D'Youville and currently has a team-best four points to her credit. Delfina Magro posted her first goal of the season in that game, joining Kosowski and Lola Williams as the Lakers' goal scorers to date. Kayla Desormeau has played every minute in the Mercyhurst goal, owning a 4.61 goals against average along with a .739 save percentage off 105 saves (13.1 saves per game).

Following this weekend, the Stags will travel to LIU on Friday, October 11 for an afternoon conference match up before hosting NEC foe Merrimack College on Sunday, October 13.
