FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team resumes play on Tuesday night when it heads to Lehigh University, the Stags' first game in 10 days. The team has not been on the pitch since October 5, playing Iona University to a 1-1 draw on the road.
Both teams will bring four-game unbeaten streaks into the match with Fairfield posting a 2-0-2 mark during their run and Lehigh owning a 3-0-1 mark over its recent stretch. During their streak, the Stags have defeated Columbia University and Marist College and tied nationally-ranked UConn and Iona. Lehigh defeated Boston University, Marist, and American while playing Bucknell to a draw since dropping a decision to nationally-ranked Seton Hall University on September 24.
In their last outing, the Stags used a first-half goal from
Alex Marin to take a 1-0 lead against Iona but saw the Gaels respond with their own first-half goal to tie the game at 1-1. That is where the score would remain for the remainder of the match to keep both teams unbeaten in MAAC play. Fairfield is one of four MAAC team that does not have a conference loss on the ledger, joining Iona, Siena College, and Mount St. Mary's University which all check into the week with a 2-0-1 MAAC mark.
Freshman
Devin Zachry set up Marin's goal against Iona which pushed his team-leading assist total to five through his nine appearances this year. His five assists are also good enough for third place among all MAAC student-athletes and are just two off the league leader. Zachry places second among his teammates with nine total points which includes a pair of goals scored earlier in the campaign.
William Pierce sits atop the Fairfield leader board with 11 points most of which come from his team-high five goals. Pierce's five goals are second in the MAAC, just one off the conference lead, while his 11 points tie him for fifth in the MAAC.
Goalkeeper
Viktor Nikolov continues to perform well off his line during the Stags' current unbeaten streak, allowing just two goals over those contests. He did not allow a goal in his 13 minutes of relief against Columbia or in his 90 minutes of work against UConn. The junior owns a 0.63 goals against average over his last four appearances with 15 saves highlighted by his seven stops against Iona. For the season, Nikolov has posted a 2.54 goals against average with a .607 save percentage off 34 stops in 10 matches.
Lehigh brings a 5-6-2 overall record and a 3-1-1 Patriot League mark into Tuesday night's match which includes a 3-1 win over American University in the team's last outing. It marked the sixth time that Lehigh has scored at least two goals in a game and the third time it scored three times in a match this year.
Perry Kingson paces the offense with four goals and four assists for 12 points in his 12 appearances this year while Thomas Robertson holds down second with seven points off three goals and an assist. Yusef Gueye also has three goals to his credit including a goal in the American game. Robertson was responsible for the other two goals in that match.
Goalkeeper Ryan Gross earned the win in the Lehigh goal, making two saves against American. He has been in the goal for six of the team's contests this year, registering a 0.88 goals against average with a .733 save percentage off 11 stops.
Fairfield returns to MAAC play on Saturday, October 19 when it hosts Rider University at Lessing Field. Game time is 7 pm.
