NEW YORK, N.Y. – The talk around the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team is only getting louder. The Stags received votes in the most-recent Associated Press Top-25 Poll, representing their first votes ever in the national poll. Fairfield is currently riding a 10-game winning streak while placing in the top-30 in the country in six different statistics.
"It's an honor for our program to be garnering some recognition nationally," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "I credit every individual in this program from players, to coaches, to staff in the way each person invests in one another. The energy, the connectedness, and the joy that each person brings to the gym every day is infectious. We've talked over and over about being consistent, and when you do that individually and collectively, the parts start to add up to a much bigger and more purposeful whole.
For us to be receiving votes in the AP Top 25 is incredibly rewarding and just the beginning of what we are building!"
The Stags are in the midst of a 10-game winning streak, the seventh longest streak in the nation, and the longest among any team on in the East Coast.
Fairfield has found this success on both sides of the ball, placing in the top-third in the country in both scoring offense and scoring defense.
On the offensive side of the court, the Stags are averaging a league-best 75.6 points per game, which is the highest by any Fairfield team since 1991. Fairfield ranks in the top-10 in the country with 9.5 made 3-pointers per game, which would be the most by any program in MAAC history.
Fairfield has also been one of the most accurate shooting teams in Division I with a .476 field goal percentage, leading the MAAC and ranking 22nd nationally.
The Stags have also found their success through a stifling defense that has allowed just 54.8 points per game, ranking second in the MAAC and 26th in the country. The squad's tenacious defense has limited opponents to a .336 field goal percentage, currently ranking eighth in the nation and the lowest in program history.
With their 12 victories, the Stags have also posted wins against opponents from seven different conferences including Power Five leagues such as the Big Ten and Big East. Fairfield's lone loss of the season came against SEC squad Vanderbilt, who is also currently receiving 38 votes in the AP poll.
The Stags were also ranked No. 12 in the College Insider Mid-Major Poll while being one of just two teams to receive a first-place vote.
Fairfield is back in action on Thursday at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena when they host Iona at 7pm.
