Swimming & Diving Continues Road Swing With James Madison & George Mason

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's and women's swimming and diving teams continue a busy month of January this weekend, especially in terms of travel. After returning from the University of Hawaii last week, the Stags will head south to James Madison University on Saturday morning.

The men's team will compete against George Mason University while the women's squad will swim a tri-meet with George Mason  and James Madison. The diving competition is slated for a 10 am start with the swimming events following after completion.

The Stags came up short against Hawaii last week, but several Fairfield student-athletes were still able to impress with two swimmers and two divers each picking up weekly honors from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). James Stewart and Tone Sandsjo secured the swimming accolades while Dillon O'Connor and Lia Oppenheim garnered the laurels from the diving board.

Stewart earned a second-place finish in the 200 free (1:40.71) and the 200 IM (1:57.67) in addition to competing in the 50 free (21.75). Sandsjo collected second-place swims in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.69) and the 50 breaststroke (29.81) while also earning third place in the 100 IM (1:02.39).

O'Connor was the Stags top diver in the 1 meter with 285.75 points and grabbed a third-place overall finish in the 3 meter with 253.12 points. Oppenheim posted 217.42 points over her six dives at 3 meters and 196.12 points at 1 meter.

The George Mason men's swimming and diving team has won two of its three dual meets this season including back-to-back victories against Davidson and La Salle. The women's team also has a pair of wins this season, defeating La Salle in its last dual meet. The James Madison women's swimming and diving team comes off a win over Marshall University in its last dual meet.

Following this weekend's action, the Stags will return to the RecPlex pool for a dual meet with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent Iona University on Saturday, January 20. The meet with the Gaels will be the final dual meet of the season for the Stags as the team finishes up the 2023-24 season with the MAAC Championships from February 14-16 in Cleveland and the NSCAA National Invitational from March 14-16 in Ocala, Fla.
