FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The top two teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings will meet this weekend as the Fairfield University Baseball team hosts the Canisius Golden Griffins at Alumni Diamond for a three-game set starting on Friday at 3pm. The Stags enter the weekend trailing Canisius by three games in the win column.
The Stags enter play on a five-game winning streak, tying for their longest of the season. It took 12 innings for Fairfield to win their last contest as they took down their crosstown rivals Sacred Heart 6-5 on Wednesday.
Griffin Watson provided the biggest hit with a go-ahead RBI single in the 12th and
Evan Berta picked up the win with three shutout innings in relief.
It was the 14th time in the last 15 games that the Stags collected 10 or more hits in a game. Fairfield's team batting average sits at .316, the 11th highest in the country. The Stags also rank 18th in slugging percentage (.537) and 24th in on-base percentage at .416.
Matt Bergevin has provided the offense with an even bigger lift as he has recorded back-to-back three-hit games since returning to the lineup from an injury. It is the first time this season he has had two-straight games with three or more hits and he is batting .857 in those two contests.
The Fairfield pitching staff has also been impressive in the last few games as they are holding a 2.08 ERA in the last four games. They have also struck out 35 batters in that stretch including a season-high 16 against the Pioneers in their last game.
Canisius enters play with a 20-18 record and a 12-3 mark in the MAAC, leading the league. Dylan Vincent is the team's leading hitter with a .369 average to go with a team-high 10 home runs. Matt Duffy is the ace of the staff with a MAAC-best 84 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .196 batting average.
After their busy week, the Stags will have a little time to relax as they next take the field next week in their final road series of the year at Marist starting on Friday at 3pm.
