Box Score 2 HAMDEN, Conn. --
Kaitlin Hoffman hit a game-deciding two-run homer in the opening game while
Samantha Lindsay tossed a five-hit shutout in the second game to lift the Fairfield University softball team to a sweep of Quinnipiac University. The sweep started a five-game road trip that includes a doubleheader with Manhattan College and a single game with Columbia University.
Quinnipiac took its only lead of the day with a single run in the third inning of the opener, stringing together four consecutive hits with two outs off starting pitcher
Allie Bridgman. The Bobcats plated their run when Bridget
Nasir stroked an infield hit to the left side of the infield to grab the early advantage. Bridgman settled into the circle after the run scored, retiring the next 10 hitters in order before a leadoff single in the top of the seventh inning.
The Stags tied the game in the fifth inning after
Anna Paravati opened the frame with a walk. Quinn
McGonigle took over at first base as a pinch runner and quickly moved to second and third following a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball.
Charli Warren followed with a fly ball to right field that allowed
McGonigle cross home plate and tie the score at 1-1.
The game remained even until the top of the seventh when the first two hitters of the inning combined for the game-deciding runs. Warren opened the inning with a base hit up the middle, bringing Hoffman to the plate. The graduate student launched a fly ball over the left field fence to bring home two runs and send the Stags to a 3-1 win. Bridgman scattered eight hits and fanned four hitters to earn the complete game victory.
The second game was decided in the first inning with the Stags scoring three runs in their first at-bat. Warren opened the game with a single but was erased when she was caught stealing for the first out. Hoffman started the rally by working out a walk which Delaney
Whieldon followed with a single to put runners on first and second.
Megan Forbes reached base off a fielder's choice to load the bases, setting up
Paravati's RBI grounder that brought home Hoffman and put runners on second and third.
Updegraff completed the scoring when she stroked a two-run single that brought the score to 3-0 after a half-inning of play.
Lindsay made those runs stand for the rest of the game, limiting the Bobcats to just five hits with two walks. She also struck out two hitters to earn her third win of the
season.
Fairfield has a quick turnaround as it returns to the road for a pair of games at Manhattan College on Saturday. First pitch is 11 am with the second game to follow at approximately 1 pm.Â
