BUFFALO, N.Y. –
Charli Warren collected a hit in both ends of a doubleheader and score one run but Canisius College ended up with the two victories, winning the first game by a 4-3 score in eight innings and the second contest by a 7-1 count.
In the opening game, Fairfield was the first team to scratch out a run in what was a pitcher's dual through the first five innings. The Stags scored the only run during that stretch when they put a run on the scoreboard during the third inning.
Morgan Sylvestre also posted her first home run of the season, a seventh-inning shot in game one.
With one out,
Madison Robicheau worked out a walk on four pitches, giving the team's first base runner since an Canisius error in the first inning. After the next batter was retired,
Kaitlin Hoffman stepped into the batter's box and stroked a triple to right center field that chased Robicheau home with the game's initial run.
Allie Bridgman and Megan Giese took over inside the pitching circle for the next two innings as neither team managed a hit off the two pitchers in the fourth or fifth frames. The Stags finally broke through in the top of the sixth courtesy of a lead-off triple by Warren. She crossed the plate when
Delaney Whieldon pushed a bunt toward the first-base side that allowed Warren to slide in safely to double the lead to 2-0. The Stags added another run in the top of the seventh off a solo homer over the left field fence by Sylvestre.
After Bridgman struck out the first hitter in the bottom half of the inning, a walk gave the home team some hope. The second out was recorded on a line drive to left field but a single, a double, and another single brought home three runs which tied the game. The Griffs won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning when Rosie Gomez cleared the left field fence to push the score to 4-3.
Gomez was instrumental in the second game as well, spotting Canisius a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Christie McGee-Ross set up the two-run shot with a base hit which Gomez followed with her two-out homer.
Fairfield cut into the Griffs' advantage in the third inning, a rally started when
Haley Updegraff was hit by a pitch to start the inning. She reached scoring position on a passed ball and continued to third when
Charli Warren beat out a ball to the right side of the infield. Warren proceeded to steal second base but the throw was mishandled and Updegraff was able to score the run.
Canisius regained its multi-run lead with when it posted a single run in both the third and fourth innings before breaking the game open with three more runs in the sixth inning.
Fairfield will host St. John's University in a non-conference game on Wednesday beginning at 3 pm before returning to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Saturday, April 22 with a doubleheader against Iona College. First pitch is 12 pm.
