NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Fairfield University softball made a valiant effort with a late rally against Yale University but the Stags came up just short with a 2-1 setback to the Bulldogs. Four different Stags recorded a hit in the game including an RBI single from
Kaitlin Hoffman.
Both starting pitchers seemed in control as Fairfield's
Samantha Lindsay and Yale's
Maddie Latta kept the game scoreless through the first two innings.
Allie Bridgman was the game's first baserunner which was set up with her second-inning single. The Bulldogs broke through on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning courtesy of a leadoff walk by Ava Kang. She put herself in scoring position with a stolen base before moving up another base on a fly ball to right field.
Libby Peoples chased the first run across home plate with her fielder's choice which resulted in Kang beating the throw and allowed Peoples to reach first base. Peoples came around to score when Willa
Ferrer hit a line drive to right field which skipped past the right fielder and went all the way to the fence.Â
The Stags found their footing in the batter's box when they came to bat in the sixth inning.
Charli Warren opened the frame when she beat out a slow roller that was fielded by the first baseman. She went to second base after Haley
Updegraff ripped a ground ball to deep shortstop which enabled both runners to stay on the base paths.
Kaitlin Hoffman made it three hits in a row for Fairfield with her line drive was perfectly tucked down the left field line for another single.Â
Fairfield had one more chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning but a pair of pop ups in foul territory and a fly ball to center field ended the game with the Stags trailing by a run.Â
Lindsay tossed the first three innings and allowed just two hits during her stint in the circle. She eventually yielded to
Alyssa Weinberg who turned in her third straight scoreless outing in as many appearances. The
freshman scattered three hits and struck out two batters to finish out the game for Fairfield.
The Stags will open up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play this weekend with a pair of home doubleheaders. Fairfield hosts Rider University for a twin bill on Saturday, April 1 beginning at noon before welcoming Mount St. Mary's University on Sunday, April 2 at noon. Check back to the softball web site for weather updates for the upcoming weekend.
