Softball Will Play Modified Schedule This Weekend At Virginia Tournament

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A forecast of inclement weather on Friday has forced changes to this weekend's softball tournament hosted by the University of Virginia. Friday's slate has been canceled but the Fairfield University softball team will still have three games on the schedule over Saturday and Sunday.

The Stags will open play this weekend on Saturday afternoon when they play George Mason at 2 pm. Fairfield will follow up with a night game against the host school with first pitch scheduled for 7 pm. The Stags finish up their southern swing with a single game against DePaul on Sunday at 12:30 pm.

George Mason enters this weekend with a 7-3 overall record which includes a weekend series win over the College of the Holy Cross last weekend. The Patriots won the opening game with the Crusaders by a 9-1 count and came back with a doubleheader split the following day. George Mason took the first game by a 6-1 score before dropping the nightcap by a 4-2 margin.

Haley Toarmina leads the George Mason offense with a .500 batting average followed by Elyssa DeRosa who checks in with a .440 hitting percentage. More than half of Toarmina's 16 hits have resulted in extra bases, stroking seven doubles, a triple, and two home runs. DeRosa has earned seven walks this season which gives her a team-leading .576 on-base percentage. Five different George Mason pitchers have earned at least one win this year, led by Jordan Tallman's 3-1 record. The staff has combined for a 1.28 ERA over its 10 decisions.

Virginia is unbeaten on its own diamond, sporting a 14-3 overall record with half of those victories coming at home. The Cavaliers have won their last seven games, including five decisions that went six innings or less.

Katie Goldberg paces all Virginia hitters with a .304 batting average and five doubles in 17 starts. The team has plenty of power in the lineup as three student-athletes have five home runs each so far this season. M.C. Eaton (15 RBI), Sarah Coon (12 RBI), and Jade Hylton (13 RBI) account for 15 of the team's 23 home runs this season. Molly Grube has posted a staff-best five wins in the pitching circle courtesy of her 0.89 ERA. Jenny Bressler is not far behind with her four victories over her nine appearances.

DePaul comes into the weekend with a 6-7 overall record after splitting a four-game set in Carbondale, Ill. last weekend. The team opened the season with four straight wins in its own DePaul Dome Tournament.

The Blue Demons have three hitters over the .300 mark to date, namely Anna Wohlers (.351 batting average), Brooke Johnson (.342 batting average), and Addison Talbot (.304 batting average). Wohlers also leads the squad with 12 RBI and is co-leader with Johnson with four home runs each. Katey Pierce is unbeaten in her four appearances, winning her only decision this year. Brenna Smith and Bella Nigey are tied for the team lead with two victories each.

Fairfield looks to improve on its 3-2 overall record with all of those games coming in the Hatters Classic hosted by Stetson University. The Stags posted a pair of wins over Monmouth and picked up a split with the host school.

Freshman Delaney Whieldon made her mark on the program by batting .500 over her five starts, picking up six hits and three RBI. Kaitlin Hoffman posted a team-best seven hits during the Classic which led her to a .412 batting average. Allie Bridgman, Samantha Lindsay, and Alyssa Weinberg each earned a win in the opening weekend.
