FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will honor the commitment and accomplishments of their Class of 2023 when they host Senior Night on Thursday night against Marist with a 7pm tip-off. Before the game, the Stags will recognize seniors Mackenzie Martin and
Jocelyn Polansky as well as graduate students
Andrea Hernangomez and
Callie Cavanaugh with a special ceremony beginning at 6:40pm.
The Stags are coming off a 65-56 overtime loss to Niagara, that saw the Stags rally from a nine-point deficit with just four minutes to go despite the setback. Fairfield had actually trailed by 11 before scoring 20 points in the final 7:39 of the contest.
Janelle Brown hit the biggest shot of the stretch as she connected on a game-tying 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining to force overtime. In total, the Stags shot 60 percent in the fourth quarter and are averaging 21.3 points in the final period over the last three games.
The overtime setback was the sixth time this season the Stags have gone to overtime, just one shy of tying the NCAA record which was set by Houston in 2019.
Thursday night will be a special night for the women's basketball program as they honor the senior class of Polansky and Martin, who have combined for 108 appearances in a Fairfield uniform.
The duo, along with graduate students
Callie Cavanaugh and
Andrea Hernangomez also helped the Stags to the 2021-22 MAAC Championship, the program's first in two decades.
Cavanaugh started her 100th game with the Stags in the setback against Niagara and has netted 1,026 points with Fairfield. She is 15 points shy of the 32nd spot in the record books, which will tie Cathy Dash '05.
Hernangomez has appeared in 124 games with the Stags, tying for the seventh most all-time. Her 645 career rebounds also places her 16th in the record book, and also marks the most by any Stag since 2018.
Marist will head to the Fairfield campus for the final time under legendary Head Coach Brian Giorgis, who rewrote the MAAC record books which included 11 MAAC Championships, five NCAA Tournament victories, and a spot in the 2007 NCAA Sweet 16.
This season, the Red Foxes have posted a 7-9 MAAC record, placing seventh in the league. They are led by Zaria Shazer who leads the team with 15.4 points and 7.1 rebounds.
The Stags will have a week off before taking the court at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena for the final time in it's inaugural season when they host Saint Peter's on Thursday, March 2 at 5pm.
