FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will celebrate 50 years of women's sports at Fairfield during a special halftime ceremony during their Sunday afternoon game against Fordham at 2pm. Fairfield is posting a 6-1 record, representing their best start since the 2007-08 season.
In those six wins, the Stags have defeated opponents from five different conferences, including a pair of Power Five opponents in St. John's and Rutgers. The Stags are most recently coming off a 67-62 victory over the Red Storm, marking their first win against a Big East opponent since defeating Georgetown during the 2001-02 campaign.
Fairfield got off to a fast start in their win, hitting six of their eight 3-point attempts. That has been a theme for the Stags who have connected on 32 3-pointers while holding a .516 shooting percentage in the first quarter. That represents 42 percent of their long-range shots this season.
Overall, Fairfield ranks 10th in the nation with 9.6 made 3-pointers per game.
Four different Stags reached double figures in their win over St. John's, once again showing the depth of the squad. Fairfield has averaged 27.7 bench points per game, leading the MAAC and placing 38th in the nation. That number is 7.7 more than the next closest MAAC squad in Canisius, who ranks 166th in the country.
Fordham comes into the game with an even 5-5 record after falling by three points to Siena this week. Taylor Donaldson leads the squad with 18.8 points per game while Aminata Ly is team leader on the boards with 6.6 rebounds.
The Stags will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of women's sports at Fairfield during a special halftime ceremony. The 1973-74 women's basketball squad was the first in history, going 7-1 under Head Coach Gary Dittrich. Fordham was the fourth-ever opponent for the Stags during that campaign.
Fairfield will have a week off before opening up MAAC play, taking on Mount St. Mary's on Saturday at 2pm.
