FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After two weeks on the road that spanned over 1,000 miles and two different states, the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will finally begin a local stretch where they will play six-straight games in their home state, starting with a road game at Central Connecticut State on Sunday at 1pm. Fairfield is in the midst of a six-game road trip, their longest in three seasons.
Â
The Stags are coming off a B1G win in their last road contest, defeating Big Ten member Rutgers 78-54 on the road on Monday. The victory represented just the third MAAC road win over a current member of the Big Ten and the first since Siena defeated Minnesota in 1995. The 24-point win also marked the largest scoring margin ever for a MAAC squad over a Big Ten foe.
Â
Two Stags earned their first start for the squad in the road win with
Kendall McGruder and
Emina Selimovic both checking into the starting lineup for the first time as Stags. McGruder would make her presence felt immediately, draining three 3-pointers in the first quarter, just one shy of her career-high. That would ignite Fairfield's early shooting as the team hit eight triples in the first 10 minutes.
Â
Selimovic tallied a season-high 14 points with eight coming in the second half. She would also convert two 'And-1' chances, and leads the team with three opportunities this year.
Â
The Stags' hot shooting led them to a 78-point scoring output, the fourth-straight game they have reached 70 or more points in a game. It is the first time since the 2008-09 season they have accomplished that feat. No Fairfield team has reached the 70-point mark in five-straight contests since the 2001-02 season.
Â
Fairfield totaled 11 made 3-pointers in their win at Rutgers, and are averaging 12.2 made trifectas this year. That mark ranks second in the entire country, trailing only Utah.
Â
Central Connecticut comes into the game off their first win of the season, defeating UMass Lowell in their home opener. Belle Lanpher is the team's leading scorer with 14.4 points per contest.
Â
Fairfield will conclude their six-game road trip by traveling to crosstown rivals and reigning NEC Champions Sacred Heart on Wednesday at 7pm.
