FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to face the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday night at 7pm. The Stags enter the game in a third-place tie in the MAAC after their overtime loss on Thursday afternoon.
The Stags will try and rebound after their 70-62 setback against Niagara in front of over 2,400 local school kids on Thursday afternoon. The Stags held a two-point lead with under a second to go before Niagara's Sydney Faulcon beat the buzzer with the game-tying field goal and then extended their advantage in the extra period.
Fairfield rode the loudness and energy that the 2,400 kids from 17 local schools brought as they battled back from a 12-point second half deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter.
Janelle Brown and
Callie Cavanaugh were instrumental in the Stags' comeback effort as the duo combined to go 6-for-8 from the field in the second half with 18 points.
Seven different Stags scored in the setback with
Lauren Beach setting a career-high with eight points and
Brooke Tatarian nearing her career-best with nine. Cavanaugh led the way for the Stags with 17 while Brown finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, and a team-best four steals.
Fairfield was without the efforts of
Andrea Hernangomez who missed her first game since Dec. 9, 2021. In her career, the Stags hold a 28-4 record in the MAAC in games that Hernangomez starts and a 28-25 mark in conference games that she doesn't.
For the eighth time this season, the Stags forced 20 or more turnovers in a game as they forced 20 Niagara miscues. That helped them net a season-high 18 fastbreak points. For the season, the Stags are second in the MAAC and 39th in the country with 20.0 turnovers forced per game.
The Red Foxes enter the weekend with a 3-3 mark in the MAAC after their victory over Saint Peter's. Zaria Shazer is the team leader in both points (14.9 per game) and rebounds (6.6 per contest).
The Stags will return home to host Siena on Thursday at 7pm.
