BALTIMORE, Md. – Rasmus Sorensen-Rejnhold and
Alex Oliveira each scored a goal in the Fairfield University men's soccer season opener but UMBC's late offensive burst in the second half led the home team to an 8-2 win over the Stags.
Fairfield had the better of play in the opening minutes of the game, setting up scoring opportunities for
Raz Amir, Sorensen-Rejnhold, and
Thomas Drillien. Amir's chance came just 35 seconds into the match, forcing UMBC goalkeeper Quantrell Jones to make his first save of the game.
In the seventh minute, Drillien sent a cross from the far side that skipped past all defenders and landed on the feet of Sorensen-Rejnhold. The sophomore hit a low shot to the corner but Jones was able to deflect the ball away from danger.
Alex Salt set up the third chance for the Stags when he sent a long ball toward goal which Drillien was able to track down and redirect with a header that just went wide of the far post.
With the Stags experiencing a few near misses, the Retrievers were able to connect on their first opportunities. Spencer Hanks scored a pair of goals just 100 seconds apart to push UMBC in the lead by a 2-0 count, an advantage that grew to three goals six minutes later as Taylor Calheira registered his second assist in the three-goal run.
Fairfield picked up its pace once again to match those first 12 minutes of the match and its diligence paid off with the team's first goal of the season. Amir was once again involved in the flow when he sent a ball into the box which Sorensen-Rejnhold was able to convert into a goal just inside the far post. The game would stay there through the end of the first half, sending the two teams to the locker room with the score at 3-1.
The Stags cut further into that deficit with a goal in the 59
th minute that started when Sorensen-Rejnhold made a run toward the right corner of the box before the ball was deflected back a few yards where
Alex Oliveira collected it and sent a strike from 25 yards away that beat the goalkeeper.
With Fairfield riding the momentum of its second goal, UMBC quickly deflated the Stags hopes when it was awarded a penalty kick just a minute later which was converted into a 4-2 lead. The free opportunity ignited a five-goal run that finished out the game and sent the home team to the victory.
Fairfield managed 11 shots in the game with Sorensen-Rejnhold being responsible for five of those attempts, including two that were on goal. Amir and Oliveira added the other two shots that were on target for the Stags.
Fairfield will conclude its season-opening two-game road swing when it heads to Navy for a Sunday evening match that starts at 5 pm.
