ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Raz Amir's first goal as a member of the Fairfield University men's soccer team was an impactful one. The forward scored the match's lone goal in the 52
nd minute which lifted the Stags to a 1-0 win over Navy and gave Fairfield a split on its season-opening road trip.
The two teams traded shots in the opening 20 minutes with each team alternating opportunities beginning with
Thomas Drillien's strike that went wide of the goal.
Raz Amir also picked up his first shot of the match in the 14
th minute but that attempt also skipped wide of the target.
Navy developed a run in the 24
th minute that resulted in Wasswa Robbins collecting the ball on the left side of the box before cutting toward the center and unleashing a shot that forced goalkeeper
James Anderson to make a dive to his left in order to turn away the opportunity. A few minutes later, Rasmus Sorensen-Rejnhold fully extended to put his foot on a cross but was unable to get full strength behind the shot, enabling goalkeeper Pierce Holbrook to scoop up the ball.
In the 36
th minute, Robbins made another run at the Stags goal, finding open space in the middle of the box so that he could send an attempt toward target. Once again, Anderson made a diving save to keep Navy off the scoreboard. By the half, Fairfield held a 7-4 advantage on shots but neither team was able to push anything past the goalkeepers.
Fairfield broke the scoreless game on its first shot of the second half as
Kaea Rangihaeata made a solid run that started 40 yards from goal and ended with a cross the middle of the box where Amir timed his entry to the box perfectly, finishing the cross for his first goal with the Stags.
Navy put together its best opportunity of the second half in the 63
rd minute when Connor Wolcott sent a ball toward goal but Anderson was in position to control the ball. On the ensuing possession, Drillien had the chance to add to Fairfield's lead by a Holbrook save prevented any further danger.
The home team had one final run at tying the game with less than four minutes in the match as Baba Kallie was able to work himself free so he could strike the ball but the attempt went wide right of the goal. Neither team had another shot over the final three-plus minutes.
Anderson finished the game with three saves to record the clean sheet while Holbrook was credited with two saves. Fairfield finished the match with a shot advantage of 11-8 as both sides registered four shots in the second half.
Fairfield returns to the pitch for its first home match of 2022 when the Stags host UAlbany at Lessing Field on September 2. The match is scheduled for a 7 pm start and is the first of nine home matches this season which includes five dates against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents.
