POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University softball team fell behind in both ends of today's doubleheader with Marist College but used a three-run inning in both games to come away with a sweep of the Red Foxes. The two decisions extended the team's winning streak to six games, all coming against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponents.
Marist took the lead in its first at-bat of the opening game, putting together a rally with a walk, a single, and a stolen base. With runners on second and third base, Miah McDonald sent a single up the middle to chase home Caroline Baratta and Shea Walsh for a 2-0 lead. The score remained at 2-0 until the Stags were able to put together a rally in the fourth inning.
Lauryn Rhinehart and
Megan Forbes set up the run with singles which culminated when
Ella Watson, who pinch ran for Rhinehart, came home on a misplay in the Marist infield.
The Red Foxes regained their two-run edge in the fifth inning after Miah McDonald lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Walsh. Fairfield cut into the lead again with a single run in the sixth inning as
Kasey Sekula lifted a fly ball to center field that scored
Kaitlin Hoffman, who opened the inning with a walk.
Trailing by a run heading into the top of the seventh inning, Fairfield placed the first two runners on base when
Haley Updegraff singled to center field and
Charli Warren beat out a bunt to put runners on first and second. After a fly out to right field,
Kaitlin Hoffman earned an infield single to load the bases, setting up
Megan Forbes' two-run double that put the Stags in front. Sekula ended the scoring by sending a fly ball to center field that brought home Hoffman.
Katie Kudlacik earned the victory by tossing seven innings and allowing three hits while fanning two batters.
In the second game, Marist took the lead early once again as Alyssa Grupp provided the advantage with an RBI double in the second inning. Fairfield took the lead by scoring three times in its next at-bat, taking advantage of a miscue in the outfield. With Updegraff and /

Charli Warren reached base after an error in the outfield allowed both runs to cross the plate. Warren came home after Forbes sent a single through the left side that brought the score to 3-1.
Pitcher
Lauryn Rhinehart made the lead stand, yielding just one more run off a Maddie Pleasants home run in the seventh inning. Rhinehart picked up her third win of the season by surrendering five hits and striking out one in her complete game decision.
Fairfield will return to the diamond on Thursday when it hosts the University of Hartford for a single game. First pitch is set for 3 pm.
