FAIRFIELD, Conn. –
Sam Lindsay dominated in the pitching circle while
Kasey Sekula and
Charli Warren each provided three hits as the Fairfield University softball team won its seventh straight game with a 9-0 five-inning decision over the University of Hartford.
The Stags scored in two of their four times at the plate today, driving in three runs in the second inning and adding six runs in the fourth inning to take command of the game. The Hawks appeared poised to take control in the top of the first inning by putting loading the bases with only one out courtesy of a single, a double, and a walk. But Lindsay found her way through the jam by inducing a pair of infield pop ups to retire the side.
Fairfield put things together in the second inning when Sekula registered the first of her three hits that brought home
Lauryn Rhinehart who opened the inning with a walk.
Tahlia Brown, who reached on an infield error, came around with the second run after
Morgan Sylvestre launched an RBI double. Sylvestre scored on
Haley Updegraff's base hit that closed the scoring.
After retiring the Hawks in order during the second inning, Lindsay opened the third by walking the leadoff hitter. The righthander did not yield another base runner during the rest of her time in the circle, sending down seven straight Hartford hitters before
Bailey Taylor came in to get the final two outs.
The home team broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning as the Stags registered six singles and batted around the order. Fairfield loaded the bases following Sekula's base hit, Updegraff being hit by a pitch, and Warren collecting a single.
Kaitlin Hoffman laced a single that brought home the first two runs of the inning and placed runners on the corners.
Hoffman stole second to put two more runners in scoring position with both runners touching the plate courtesy of
Megan Forbes' single.
Mikayla Rubin tallied the eighth run of the game with her sacrifice fly while Sekula closed out the offensive showcase with an RBI single.
Lindsay improved her overall record to 2-2 after her 4.1 innings of work, giving up two hits and two walks against three strikeouts. Taylor finished the game by recording outs against the two batters she faced including a strikeout. Julianna Kocenski took the loss despite only giving up three runs, one of which was earned, over three innings.
Fairfield has a day off before hosting a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheaders over the weekend. The Stags start on Saturday with a twin bill against Canisius College with first pitch scheduled for 12 pm. The team finishes the week with a match up against Niagara University on Sunday with the start time listed at 11 am. Both doubleheader will be played at Alumni Softball Field.
