FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Pitcher
Lauryn Rhinehart put together a complete game both in the pitching circle and in the batter's box to help the Fairfield University softball team close out a doubleheader sweep over Saint Peter's with a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Katie Kudlacik tossed all seven innings in the opener to earn team-leading fourth win of the season as the Stags took a 6-4 decision in the opener.
Rhinehart worked her way out of a few jams but for the most part seemed in control of the game, mixing pitchers that kept the opposition off balance. She gave up four runs in the game but only two were earned with the pair coming off a bad throw that eluded the third baseman and allowed runners to score from second and third. She allowed seven hits but did not walk a batter while striking out four.
Like she did yesterday, Rhinehart's bat was instrumental in a win as well. Against Monmouth on Friday, she delivered the game's only run with a base hit in the top of the 10
th which secured a 1-0 win over the Hawks. This afternoon, she had two hits, scored two runs, and added an RBI to her box score totals.
Rhinehart opened the sixth inning with a double that hit the base of the fence in left-center field which set up the deciding run. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Drew Westford, she came home on a long drive to right field by
Tahlia Brown that made the score 5-4.
The Stags trailed 3-0 early in the game as Saint Peter's played a run in the in the first inning following a double, a single, and a sacrifice fly. Two more runs crossed the plate when Saint Peter's sent the runner in a first-and-third situation. The Stags decoyed by tossing the ball to a middle infielder tried to throw behind the runner at third base but the ball was wide of the base.
The Stags put a run on the board in the second inning when Rhinehart doubled for the first time and came home on an error. The home team added three more runs in the bottom of the third as
Charli Warren opened with an infield hit and came home on
Kaitlin Hoffman's triple.
Megan Forbes followed with a double which brought home Hoffman and tied the score at 3-3. Rhinehart brought home the lead run on a ground out to shortstop, giving her team the lead for the first time.
Saint Peter's tied the game in fourth inning on a pair of hits, the last of which was a run-scoring single from Samantha Miller. But the Stags would take the lead for good in the sixth after Rhinehart started the rally with her long double.
Kudlacik allowed five hits with four of those hits resulting in the four runs scored by Saint Peter's. She yielded a single followed by a home run in both the third and sixth innings, but shut down the visitors in the seventh to win the game. She struck out and walked one as well during her seven innings of work.
The Stags secured an early lead when Brown lined a single up the middle in the second inning, scoring
Megan Forbes from second base. After Brandi Feeney's two-run homer, the Stags rallied for three runs in the third inning with Forbes contributing an RBI single,
Mikayla Rubin driving a run-scoring double, and Forbes coming home on a wild pitch.
Hoffman provided the fifth run with a home run that cleared the left field fence, while
Morgan Sylvestre added a sacrifice fly that plated
Ava Cohen for the team's sixth run. Forbes had three hits in the opener and added two more in the second game.
The Stags extended their winning streak to four straight games with the sweep, all against MAAC opponents. The team will put their streak on the line next Tuesday when it travels to Marist College for a doubleheader.
