Stags Sweep Doubles in 5-2 Win Over Wagner

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After spending nearly a month away from home, Fairfield University women's tennis returned to the WAC Tennis Courts for the first time this spring, and used that familiarity to their advantage, taking down Wagner, 5-2 in the final game of the non-conference schedule this season.

"It was nice to get back in the win column right before MAAC play begins, said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "Tough conditions today but I thought we handled it well."

The Stags opened the day with a clean sweep of the doubles' rounds, to take the point over the Seahawks. Scarlett Hutchinson and Francesca Karman teamed up in the topflight and battled through a tiebreaker to win the match 7-6 (7-5). In the No. 2 duel Amanda Nowak and Katarina Plumtree earned a 6-3 victory, the same score as the No. 3 match, won by Sandra Bozinovic and Laina Campos.

In singles play, Plumtree captured a win in the topflight, nearly taking the match in straight sets, but after falling in a tiebreak in set two, outlasted her opponent 10-4 in a third set tiebreaker to win 6-4, 7-6 (5-3), 1-0 (10-4). Hutchinson would also complete a 2-0 day for herself in the No. 4 bout, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, and Aina March would take the No. 5 contest in dominating fashion, winning 12 out of 14 games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Wagner would capture the No. 2 and No. 3 duels, and Karman would earn a win by default at No. 6 singles to round out the solo round, as the Stags get back in the win column as they head into MAAC play this weekend.

Fairfield women's tennis is back in action this Saturday with the first of six conference games to close the regular season, taking on Monmouth in New Jersey.
