Softball Falls To St. John's

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- For the sixth time in 14 games this season, the Fairfield University softball team played a one-run game. Unfortunately, today's game ended in walk-off fashion as St. John's University used a fielder's choice grounder to bring home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 victory over the Stags.

The contest was a back-and-forth type of game where each team held a lead before seeing the opposition rally to go back in front. Fairfield was the first team to put a run on the scoreboard, sending a runner across the plate in the second inning. Allie Bridgman started things with a triple to the opposite field, setting up Evie Wright for an RBI opportunity. The outfielder responded with an infield single that allowed Bridgman to scamper home for a 1-0 lead.

The Red Storm took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning with a pair of runs which scored following an RBI single by Madison Wallace and a misplayed grounder off the bat of Meisha Murray. The Stags tied the game in their next at-bat when Kaitlin Hoffman's single to center field chased Haley Updegraff with the team's second run. Updegraff opened the inning with a single, one of her two hits on the day.

St. John's recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with an unearned run to bring the score to 3-2. With two outs and a runner on first base, Anna Freveletti hit a grounder that turned into an error that prolonged the inning. Anese Thompson took advantage of the miscue and sent a single up the middle to bring the lead run home.

The Stags rallied in the top of the seventh inning when Morgan Sylvestre opened the frame with a long double to center field. Madison Robicheau dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance Sylvestre one base, giving an RBI chance to Mikayla Rubin. The infielder sliced a single to left field to score the tying run, forcing the game into another half inning.

St. John's registered the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, using a pair of singles and a grounder to the right side of the infield to produce the deciding run.

Fairfield will return to the diamond on Friday afternoon when it travels to Rutgers University for a tournament that also includes the College of the Holy Cross and Stony Brook University. The Stags and the Scarlet Knights are slated for a 3:45 first pitch.
