Box Score NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- The Fairfield University softball team dropped its opener at the Rutgers University Invitational as the host school posted an 8-0 victory on Friday afternoon. 
The Scarlet Knights scored at least one run in all five innings of the shortened game, including multiple runs in the second and fifth frames. Rutgers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when 
Maddie Lawson sent a sacrifice fly to center field after the team loaded the bases. Gabrielle Callaway was responsible for the first two runs in the second inning as the graduate student laced a two-run single with one out. 
Kyleigh Sand brought home the third run of the inning with grounder that brought the score to 4-0.
Kayla Bock added another run to the Scarlet Knights total with an RBI double in the third inning while Callaway struck for the team's next run in the fourth frame. Sand closed out the scoring with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning, ending the game at 8-0. 
Fairfield managed one hit in the game which came in the top of the first inning when Haley 
Updegraff laced a single to left field but was retired when she was caught stealing later in the inning. 
Allie Bridgman and 
Lauryn Rhinehard pitched for the Stags with each hurler tossing two innings in the game.
The Stags will return to action on Saturday when they take on the College of the Holy Cross on Saturday at 9 am followed by another single game against Stony Brook at 11:15 am. Both games will be played on the Rutgers University campus.
