Box Score HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- The Fairfield University softball opened up a 4-1 lead against Marshall University early in the game but the Thundering Herd battled back with six unanswered runs to take the final game of the Thundering Herd March Madness Tournament by an 8-4 margin on Sunday.
The Stags took an early with an unearned run in the second inning, an opportunity that began with
Haley Updegraff stroking a single to center field. After stealing second base, Updegraff took third base when
Drew Westford's grounder was mishandled to put runners on the corners. The run came home when a pitch skipped to the back stop allowing the runners to move up a base. Marshall tied the game in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a run-scoring double from Autumn Owen.
Fairfield picked up three runs in its half of the third inning which came off three hits in the frame.
Mikayla Rubin started the rally with a one-out double and promptly scored when
Kaitlin Hoffman followed with an RBI single. Hoffman came around to score a few batters later when Updegraff launched a home run to left field that brought the score to 4-1.
Marshall's offense took over the game from that point, beginning with a single run in the bottom of the third which came off an RBI single from Owen. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Thundering Herd plated four runs when Lauren Love and Saige Pye each drove two-run homers over the center field fence to put the home team in front 6-4. The home team closed out the scoring in the fifth inning as Mya Stevenson lined a double down the left field line to bring the score to 8-4.
The Stags are slated to play their first game in the Northeast this week when they travel to Saint John's University on Wednesday for a single game before making a trip to New Jersey for the Rutgers University tournament over the weekend.
