FAIRFIELD, Conn., - The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will look for a perfect home stand and their fifth-straight win when they welcome the Canisius Golden Griffins to Webster Bank Arena on Saturday at 2pm. The program will also celebrate Play 4 Kay during the contest. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to promote breast cancer awareness. The Stags are coming off a hard-fought 75-72 win against the Niagara Purple Eagles, the fourth-straight win for the team. For the first time this season, the Stags have five players tally double figures with
Lou Lopez-Senechal and
Sydney Lowery leading the team with 15.
Callie Cavanaugh,
Rachel Hakes, and
Sam Lewis joined the duo in double figures.
Niagara cut a 15-point deficit to just one in the fourth quarter.
Rachel Hakes connected on a long 3-pointer that beat the shot clock's buzzer which would extend the lead to seven with 3:55 left. Niagara did not give up and shaved the deficit to two in the final minute. Lewis and
Janelle Brown would ice the game combining to go 5-for-6 from the line in the last minute.
As a team, the Stags went 16-for-19 from the foul line, including a perfect 6-for-6 for Lowery.
The Stags also shot 47 percent from behind the 3-point line, extending a recent string of success. Fairfield is averaging 6.7 3-pointers and are shooting 47 percent from long range in the last three games.
With the win, the Stags boosted their conference record to 11-1, matching their best start to a conference slate since the 2011-12 season. Fairfield's best MAAC season came during the 1990-91 campaign when they finished 15-1 in the MAAC.
The 11 conference victories are tied for the most in the country, matching NC State, IUPUI, Youngstown State, and South Dakota.
Canisius enters with a 1-10 league mark after defeating Siena last week. Dani Haskell leads the team with a 14.4 scoring average and 2.2 3-pointers per game.
Fairfield will have a short break after playing three games in five days, next traveling to Iona for a Thursday night game at 7pm.
