FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will cap a Fairfield Basketball Doubleheader at Webster Bank Arena when they welcome the Siena Saints at 3:30 pm. The contest will begin at least 30 minutes after the conclusion of the men's squad facing Niagara. The Stags, who enter with their best conference record in 30 years, will look to avenge their only conference loss of the season.
Fairfield picked up their sixth-straight win in their best defensive effort of the season, holding the Iona Gaels to a season-low 29 points and a 23 percent shooting mark. Fairfield limited the Gaels to single digits in all four quarters and out-scored the home side 14-5 in the second quarter.
Sam Lewis and
Rachel Hakes led the offensive punch for the Stags as both graduate students connected on three 3-pointers with Hakes setting a new career-high. The point guard has found her shooting touch in the last four games, shooting 57 percent (8-for-14) from long range while averaging 10.5 points during that span.
Fairfield's leading scorer
Lou Lopez-Senechal also returned to the starting lineup after missing the game against Canisius due to an injury. The senior posted 11 points while going 4-for-11 from the field and contributing two assists.
She was also one of five Stags to record a block in the game with the Stags swatting a season-high eight blocks against the Gaels. Those eight blocks are just two fewer than Fairfield tallied in their first 10 games combined. In their last 12 contests, the Stags have notched 47 blocks.
With their 16-6 overall mark and a 13-1 league record, the Stags found themselves ranked in the College Insider Women's Basketball Mid-Major poll, slotting No. 24. This is the third week this season that Fairfield has been ranked in the national poll and is the only MAAC team to be receiving votes.
The Stags will be looking to avenge their only MAAC loss of the season as the Saints defeated Fairfield 69-56 on Jan. 22. Siena connected on a season-high 11 3-pointers and shot 50 percent from long range in the victory.
Fairfield will next welcome Quinnipiac to Webster Bank Arena with the crosstown rivalry game starting on Thursday night at 7pm.
