Stags Tip-Off Against No. 23 Michigan on Sunday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Less than 48 hours after the Grand Opening of the Leo D. Mahoney Arena, the on-campus arena will welcome their first nationally-ranked opponent as the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team hosts No. 23 Michigan on Sunday at 2pm. The win was not only their first-ever in their new arena, but was also the 700th in program history.

The Stags fed off the energy of 2,500 fans in the historic inaugural game of the Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Friday night with a 77-53 win over Stonehill. Andrea Hernangomez got the place rocking as she tallied in 20-points, tying her career-high. She also dished out a personal-best seven assists and swished through three 3-pointers.

Hernangomez was one of 10 different Stags to get into the scoring column as the Stags shot 53 percent in the game and tallied 28 fourth quarter points. The 22 points off the bench doubled the total output for the Stags in the first three games combined. Mackenzie Daleba led the reserves with six points on 3-for-4 shooting.

Fairfield is now averaging 21.0 points and shooting .508 in the fourth quarter this season.

Fairfield also found success on the defensive side of the ball by swiping a season-high 16 steals. Janelle Brown tied for the team-high with five steals. Brown leads the MAAC and ranks sixth in the nation with 16 steals.

Michigan brings an unblemished 3-0 record into the game and averaging 91.0 points per game, ranking eighth in the nation. The Wolverines lead the Big Ten in scoring defense (44.3) and rebounding margin (+25.0).

Laila Phelia is averaging 22.0 points per game on 77.8 percent shooting. She leads the Big Ten in field goal percentage and is second in scoring.

After playing three games this week, the Stags will have 10 days off before next tipping off at Fordham on Nov. 30 at 5:30pm.
