FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Women's Basketball graduate forward
Callie Cavanaugh was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week after the first week of the 2022-23 season. Cavanaugh's week was highlighted by a career-high 36-point performance in the season-opener at Brown, tying for the second-most in a single game in program history.
"I'm so proud of Callie and how hard she has worked this off season," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "She epitomizes what it means to work while no one is watching, and sets the standard for our team each and every day. I truly believe this is only the beginning for her!"
Cavanaugh averaged 24.5 points per game during Fairfield's 1-1 week, reaching double figures in both games. She willed the Stags to their first win of the year by netting 19 points in the fourth quarter to help the Stags erase a five-point deficit. The 36 points was tied for the second most in a game program history and tied for the most in the country on Opening Night.
For the week, Cavanaugh recorded 20 made field goals, the second-most in the country. She shot .625 from the floor and hauled in 5.0 rebounds per game.
Cavanaugh was a Preseason All-MAAC Second Team selection after being voted an All-MAAC Third Team honoree last season.
Cavanaugh and the Stags will close out a three-game road trip tonight when they take the short trip to New Haven, Conn., to face Yale. Fairfield will then open up the brand-new Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Friday night at 7pm.
