PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team saw its three-game road winning streak come to an end on Friday afternoon after Drexel University posted a 5-1 win on its home turf. The Dragons scored the first four goals of the game before the Stags were able to secure a goal in the third quarter.
Four different student-athletes were responsible for the home team's fast start, including Avery Powell's opening goal just 98 seconds into the game. Eline Di Leva set up the game's first goal, finding Powell inside the circle which the senior quickly sent past goalkeeper
Zoe Rosen to take the early lead. Liz Chipman doubled the advantage when she finished off a first-quarter penalty corner that included touches from Amber Brouwer and Stephanie Oleykowski with under three minutes remaining in the period.
Drexel built upon its lead with the lone goal in the second quarter as well as the first goal of the third quarter. Brouwer was responsible for the team's third goal when she converted a scoring opportunity created by passes from Isabel Jacobs and Powell in the 27th minute. The lead increased to 4-0 when Di Leva accepted a pass from Powell 34 seconds into the third quarter and pushed the ball into the corner of the cage.
Fairfield broke through just 15 seconds later courtesy of
Julianna Kratz who turned a pass from
Danielle Profita into the team's first goal and her first of the season. Drexel closed out the scoring less than two minutes into the fourth quarter when Di Leva tallied her second goal of the game with an unassisted shot.
The Stags were the more aggressive team in the second half, taking 20 shots total over the final 30 minutes which forced Drexel goalkeeper Megan Hadfield to make 10 saves on those opportunities. Rosen made five saves in her 47-plus minutes of work in the Fairfield net before yielding to teammate
Payton Rahn who did not make a stop during the final 13 minutes of play.
Fairfield will close out the weekend by hosting another Philadelphia-based opponent on Sunday when Villanova University visits University Field at 1 pm. The Stags will open Northeast Conference play on October 1 when they welcome LIU to the Fairfield campus.
