Box Score FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team held a first-half lead before Stony Brook University scored late in the second half an again the second overtime to come away with a 2-1 victory over the Stags. The game marked the second straight match that went to extra time.
Fairfield seemed to have the better of it in the first half, putting pressure on the
Seawolves' defense by attacking in waves. The Stags nearly put their first goal on the board in the 25th minute when
Rasmus Sorensen
Rejnhold made a run down the left side and sent a cross to the middle of the box. After an initial header was blocked, Daniel
Raimondo found the rebound and flicked a shot that headed for the left corner but skipped past the far post to keep the game scoreless.
Stony Brook also had a solid opportunity in the first half when a cross was redirected off the head of Gabriel
Fernandes. Goalkeeper
James Anderson quickly reacted to the ball and turned the shot away to end the dangerous threat. The Stags came back just three minutes later courtesy of some brilliance by Jonathan
Filipe. The senior collected the ball around midfield and made a run down the spine of the pitch. A soft touch pushed the ball his defender which freed him to send a pass to Thomas
Drillien. The sophomore placed a shot toward goal, but the ball was knocked down by a defender before it could cross the goal line.
Fairfield finally broke through when Stony Brook
committed an infraction inside the box, giving the Stags an opportunity from the spot in the final 90 seconds of the first half.
Filipe stepped to the ball and sent a shot into the upper corner of the net to send Fairfield into the intermission with a one-goal edge.
In the second half, Fairfield put together a few opportunities in the first 20 minutes, the first of which was created by
Rejnhold's cross to
Filipe's head, but the ball sailed wide of the near post. Then,
Drillien accepted a cross about 10 yards from goal and put a shot on goal that required a save from the Stony Brook goalkeeper in the 73rd minute. On the team's next possession, Stony Brook tied the game when Jonas
Bickus tucked a header just inside the upper corner.
When the game entered overtime, both teams worked for opportunities to win the game, but neither could find the back of the net in the first overtime. The game ended midway through the second overtime when Sebastian
Rojek converted a cross to center box with a header that beat the goalkeeper to present a 2-1 win for Stony Brook. The result was the second overtime victory for the
Seawolves this season.
Fairfield will play another road game against Princeton University on Wednesday, September 15 for its next match before returning home for a September 21 match against the University of Hartford. The game will take place at Lessing Field beginning at 7 pm.
