FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men's Soccer Head Coach Krystian Witkowski announced the addition of Malcolm Johnston to the coaching staff. Johnston will serve as a graduate assistant coach beginning with the 2026 season.

He begins his coaching career at Fairfield University after three seasons in professional soccer, bringing experience from the NCAA Division I, MLS, and MLS NEXT Pro levels.

"Malcolm's extensive soccer background, shaped by his experience in professional soccer, combined with his strong work ethic, dedication to player growth, and lively energy, will benefit our student-athletes daily. His awareness of the standards in a high-performance setting will serve as a valuable resource for our players aiming to develop and achieve their goals."

Johnston spent four years at the University of Maryland where he served the Terrapins as a two-year captain in 2021 and 2022. He garnered several honors during his time in College Park, picking up All-Big ten first team accolades and United Soccer Coaches All-Region second team honors in his senior season. He was also a member of the 2019 Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

During his time in Maryland, Johnston played in 58 of the program's 61 matches during his four-year stay. He ended his career with 14 goals and 13 assists for 41 points. In his senior campaign, he tallied six goals and eight assists which helped the Terrapins capture the 2022 Big Ten Championship.

In the classroom, Johnston earned All-Big Ten Academic three times. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management from the Robert H. Smith School of Business while being recognized as a four-year Dean's List student-athlete.

Following his collegiate career, Johnston was selected in the first round of the 2023 MLS SuperDraft by New York City FC before signing professionally with the Vancouver Whitecaps. He spent the 2023 season competing in MLS NEXT Pro before joining Portland Timbers 2, where he played the next two seasons. In his second year with the club, Johnston was named team captain, further demonstrating the leadership qualities that had defined his playing career.

Johnston comes from a family with a strong soccer background. He has two older brothers, Declan and Alistair, with Alistair representing both Celtic FC and the Canadian Men's National Team.

The Fairfield University men's soccer team will open the 2026 season on Thursday, August 20, traveling to Marshall University for a 7 pm match. The team's home opener is slated for Tuesday, September 1 against Lehigh University for a 6 pm match.
