FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- One swing of the bat from
Kaitlin Hoffman provided the Fairfield University softball team with all the offense it would need to win the opening game of today's doubleheader with Siena College as the Stags posted a 5-1 win before falling by a 7-0 count in the nightcap. The two teams split the four-series which left the Stags with 8-6 overall and
MAAC records.
With the game tied at 1-1, Fairfield put together a rally in the third inning which started when Madison
Robicheau stroked a single to lead off the inning, one of three hits on the day for the shortstop.
Mikayla Rubin gave herself up with a sacrifice bunt to put a runner in scoring position with one out. Lacey
Olaff followed with a single and secured second base on an error during the relay throw to put two runners in scoring position.
Megan Forbes beat out an infield hit to load the bases, giving the Stags two shots at scoring a run. Following a fly out to right field, Hoffman stepped into the batter's box and
launched a grand slam over the center field fence to give the lead to Fairfield for the first time.Â
Both teams scored a run in the first inning with Siena scoring in the top of the first inning off an RBI single from Emma McLaughlin which sent Isabelle
Pardo home with the game's first run. Fairfield tied the game in the bottom of the inning when
Robicheau singled with one out and went to second when a Siena infielder missed the tag on a grounder to the right side of the infield putting runners on first and second. After
Olaff was hit by a pitch to the load the bases,
Megan Forbes ripped a single down the right field line to chase
Robicheau home with the tying run.
Pitcher
Allie Bridgman earned the victory to improve to 2-0 by allowing one unearned run over seven innings and scattering three hits with three strikeouts.
The second game ended much as the same as yesterday's nightcap did with Siena scoring seven runs and pitcher Allison
Speshyockk tossing a complete game shutout. The Saints scored all of their runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings starting with a three-run rally in the third.
Yami Evans, Maritza Diaz, and Toni Alba each registered an RBI base hit to build the early lead.
Fairfield managed six hits in the game highlighted by a pair of singles from
Sam Merino and Forbes. Hoffman and Robicheau also had a hit each in the game. The Stags were able to put runners on base throughout the seven-inning contest but left 13 stranded by game's end.
The Stags will return to the diamond this weekend when they travel to Rider University for four games, playing a doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday.Â
