Stags Clipped by Visiting Monmouth, 4-3

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Monmouth's Lenien Jamir eked out a marathon 12-10 third-set tiebreaker at #5 singles to push the visiting Hawks to a 4-3 win over Fairfield University Women's Tennis on Wednesday afternoon. The Stags got singles wins from Katarina Plumtree, Francesca Karman and Sophia Prinos in the midweek MAAC outing.

"Tough loss today to an improved Monmouth team," said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "Credit to them for winning a few more big points than we did; they earned it. We fought incredibly hard, but just couldn't pull it out."

In doubles action, Karman and Scarlett Hutchinson teamed up for a 7-6 (6) win at the #1 spot, but Hawks were victorious at #2 and #3 to pick up the point.

Prinos was the first to conclude her singles match – a 6-0, 6-1 rout at #6 to even the match at 1-1. Plumtree soon followed with a win at #2 before Hutchinson fell at #1 to run the team tally to 2-2. Karman then added her win at #3 and Aina March was edged in three sets at #4 as the #5 slot pitting Jamir against Fairfield's Anna Komer became the deciding match.

The adversaries split two even sets with Komer taking the first, 7-5, and Jamir winning the equalizer, 6-4. The third set was a dead heat to 6-6, forcing a tiebreak. After 22 points, it was Jamir on the plus side of the 12-10 count to clinch the win for the Hawks.

Fairfield's Thursday match with Marist has been postponed, as Marist has extended its campus-wide pause in activity. The Stags' next scheduled outing is a Sunday, April 11 visit from Siena. First serve on Senior Day is slated for 11 a.m.
