Stags Receive Votes in USA Today Coaches Poll

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The historic 20-0 start to the Fairfield University Baseball season has been gaining more respect around the country. For the first time in program history, the Stags received multiple votes in a national Top-25 list as they earned 10 points in the most recent USA Today Coaches Poll. The Stags also kept their top spot in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Poll for the second-straight week.

"It just shows where we have come to date," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "We've done a good job in executing pithing, hitting, and fielding. But it certainly isn't going to get us into a MAAC Tournament, it's not going to get us to win the Championship, we have to earn that. We're staying humble but we're very proud of where we're at right now and have done a very good job to date."

The only undefeated team in the nation, the Stags overtook the top spot in the National RPI rankings with a four-game sweep over Monmouth and improve their record to 20-0.

The Stags' 10 points tied with Liberty for the No. 33 spot in the country. Fairfield was also listed as the 21st mid-major squad in the country by 11point7.

Aside from Fairfield's perfect start they also have several national resume builders. The Stags' pitching staff holds the best ERA (1.96), WHIP (0.87), and walks allowed per nine innings (2.02). Fairfield also ranks in the top-5 in the NCAA in strikeout to walk ratio (4.09) and shutouts (five.)

Two of the Stags starters, John Signore (1.08) and Jake Noviello (1.29) both rank in the top-15 in the country in ERA. Noviello ranks second in the nation with a 0.64 WHIP.

The Stags' offense has also been impressive as they are hitting .314 as a team, the fourth best number in the nation. Mike Caruso's .404 batting average highlights five Stags who are hitting over .350. The Stags biggest power threat of the season, Justin Guerrera ranks fifth in the nation in slugging percentage at .814.

Fairfield puts their undefeated mark on the line when they travel to Saint Peter's for a Wednesday doubleheader at noon.
